My Life's Calling with Great Rewards
Roel, Physical Therapist, SMMC
"I applied to St. Mary's Medical Center because it was an opportunity in a rehabilitation unit, one setting in our field that is sometimes difficult to come by. In the beautiful city of San Francisco, a place like nowhere else in the world, I could not refuse when I was offered a position! This hospital offers to me a fulfillment of my purpose, much more than a simple career, or lively-hood. It is a place where I can complete a role that I was always meant to play. An avenue where I can put my skills to work, and use those skills that I have worked for a long time to develop. It is a place that I really believe was part of a greater plan, to serve the people that need it the most, and team up with some very amazing and thoughtful co-workers.
Being a physical therapist at St. Mary's Medical Center was really more than a job for me. It's my life's calling, and the Catholic values and mission are a perfect match for me, where I may directly make others' lives better, and serve those who are in the most desperate times of life. The best part of the job is the satisfaction of knowing that I am physically bringing others back to a level where they were before some great tragedy. It is the knowledge that I am affecting people, families, and lives in a direct way bringing to them quality and dignity in difficult times. Nothing is better than seeing patients that you have treated in the past, return to a much better place, happy, smiling and thankful for the role that I have played."
