Professional Growth & DevelopmentSequoia Hospital is proud to be one of two hospitals chosen to implement a CHW pilot nurse-mentoring program designed to attract and retain more nurses to the profession. Partially funded by the California Endowment, the program teams an experienced RN with a new nurse graduate, a nurse re-entering the workforce, or a nurse training for a new specialty area. The mentors work closely with the trainee for three months, providing training and other support, with the goal of ensuring success. Ultimately the program will provide a replicable model that other hospitals can use to provide one-on-one support for newly hired, re-entering, and transitioning nurses. In addition, the Sequoia Health Care District, part owner of Sequoia Hospital, is supporting a new Bachelor of Science program in nursing to help increase the number of qualified nurses in California. In all, the District is providing $1 million as well as some in-kind services, to cover a large portion of nurse education costs. The program-offered on the Canada Community College campus is taught by faculty from San Francisco State University and admits approximately 40 students per year. This is an accelerated program to allow nurses to graduate in only 2.5 years, including summer sessions. |
