Located in Carmichael, Mercy San Juan serves the people of North Sacramento County and South Placer County.  Founded in 1967, Mercy San Juan is looking toward the future.  A major expansion is under way that includes a new six-story tower that will help meet the increasing needs of the surrounding communities.  The new tower will add 110 beds to the existing 260-bed facility.  The new tower combines state-of-the-art technology, the latest in healthcare interior design and the heritage of the Sisters of Mercy to create a unique healing environment of both patients and caregivers.  Patients visiting Mercy San Juan will not only receive excellent care, but will also experience a comfortable and convenient stay in a private room.  The new tower is scheduled to open by the end of 2009. 

Some of Mercy San Juan’s key services and programs include:

Bariatric surgery: The American Society of Bariatric Surgeons recognizes Mercy San Juan as a Center of Excellence. The program is led by Laura Machado, MD, one of the only female bariatric surgeons in Northern California.

Cardiac services: As part of Mercy Heart & Vascular Institute, Mercy San Juan’s complete cardiac program includes cardiac surgery, cardiac catheterization and rehabilitation programs. The cardiac team ranks among the nation’s best in getting patients from the Emergency Room door to the procedure they need in the fastest time. In 2008 and 2009, Blue Cross/Blue Shield recognized Mercy San Juan as a Blue Distinction Center for Cardiac Care.

da Vinci Surgical System: The da Vinci Surgical System uses the latest robotic technology to provide patients with a precise, non-invasive alternative to both traditional surgery and laparoscopy. Patients benefit by having less bleeding, less pain, quicker recoveries and less risk for nerve damage. In addition to surgeons who perform gynecologic, kidney and prostate procedures, Mercy San Juan has the only robotic-trained thoracic surgeons in Northern California using da Vinci to treat lung and esophagus diseases.

Family Birth Center: At Mercy San Juan, more than 3,000 babies are born each year, with excellent care for full-term newborns in the Family Birth Center and for premature or seriously ill infants in the Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO)
: Mercy San Juan is the only hospital in the Sacramento area to provide hyperbaric oxygen therapy to treat patients with tissue damage from radiation therapy, carbon monoxide poisoning, slow-healing wounds and gangrene.

Level II Trauma Center: The Trauma Center celebrated its 10th anniversary in August 2009.  Mercy San Juan sees more ambulance traffic than any other hospital in the greater Sacramento area.  It is recognized nationally as a leader in trauma care and enhances care for all medical center patients with advanced diagnostic imaging equipment, monitoring equipment and lab services. The Trauma Center has received American College of Surgeons (ACS) verification, the gold standard for trauma centers. 

Mercy Cancer Center: The Mercy Cancer Center provides high-quality, comprehensive cancer services in one centralized location. Each year, the medical center sees nearly 2,000 patients in the Oncology Unit. Prevention and early detection, inpatient and outpatient treatment, specialized surgery, research, rehabilitation, home health and hospice are some of the core services provided. The Mercy Center for Breast Health offers women a full range of quality breast health services in a comfortable, homelike environment.

Mercy Neurological Institute of Northern California and Primary Stroke Center
: The Mercy Neurological Institute of Northern California offers the experience and expertise of neurological specialists at Mercy San Juan to provide state-of-the-art care for the most complex of diseases that affect the brain, including stroke, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, advanced neurovascular therapy, spine and brain trauma. Mercy San Juan has achieved the Gold Seal of Approval and designation as a Primary Stroke Center from The Joint Commission.

Mercy Sleep Center
: Accredited by the American Sleep Disorders Association, the Sleep Center annually helps more than 2,000 Sacramento-area residents learn how to get a better night’s sleep and improve their overall health.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU): Mercy San Juan Medical Center’s 26-bed NICU celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2009 and is consistently ranked among the world’s top 10% in caring for seriously ill or premature infants. For babies weighing just 1 to 3 pounds, Mercy San Juan routinely ranks in the nation’s top 5% for survival, according to data from the Vermont Oxford Network. The organization tracks neonatal outcomes at approximately 500 participating NICUs from the United States and internationally.

Orthopedic services: Mercy San Juan’s orthopedic surgeons and expert staff provide patients with thorough diagnosis and effective treatment solutions to restore strength, flexibility and function to major joints such as knees, hips and shoulders. Treatment for joint pain caused by arthritis, as well as treatment for injuries to ligaments or tendons, ranges from physical therapy to joint replacement surgery to rehabilitation.

Outpatient obstetrical services: Mercy San Juan offers Sweet Success (a comprehensive education program for diabetic mothers) and the Mercy Perinatal Recovery Network (a support and education program for pregnant women and new moms who are experiencing substance-abuse problems).

Trauma prevention: Mercy San Juan is the lead agency for the local and statewide SAFE KIDS Coalition, a collaborative effort between healthcare, law enforcement, fire departments and other community leaders who work together to provide child safety education. Mercy San Juan and SAFE KIDS received a national award for a program that educates non-English speaking families about car seat safety. Mercy San Juan also promotes drunken driving prevention among teens through the “Every 15 Minutes” program.
